In 2021, as part of Surci’s 10th anniversary project, a bag design contest was held for 80 second- and third-year students from the Knit Design Department at Bunka Fashion College.
First, students submitted design sketches. From these, seven second-year students and four third-year students were selected.
The selected 11 students then created their designs: second-years freely designed and decorated a simple raffia bag base (provided by Surci; they could choose from three styles) using different materials like yarn; third-years designed and produced raffia bags with a focus on creating a viable commercial product.
In spring 2022, top winners were determined based on Instagram votes, combined with evaluations from Cebu managers and knitting representatives.
Second-year student Yumi Suzuki (1st place) and Sumire Hashimoto (2nd place) received prize money. Unfortunately, none of the third-year designs were selected for commercialization.
Everyone faithfully created wonderful bags true to their design sketches. All 11 selected participants received a Surci bag of their choice and commemorative gifts as supplementary prizes.

From June 1st to 7th, we held a one-week exhibition and sale at the bag section of Shinjuku Odakyu Department Store, alongside a Surcy pop-up store. Many customers visited, and the event concluded successfully to positive reviews.
Furthermore, the proceeds from these bag sales will be used to provide scholarships for the children of local knitters.
